Alex Vitrella- Development Coordinator

Born in New Orleans to a Mexican mother and an American father, Alex Vitrella has spent most of her life jumping between the two countries and cultures. She attended Carleton College in Northfield, MN where she majored in Sociology/ Anthropology. Through her studies in Sociology and Anthropology Alex became intrigued by the different educational pedagogies implemented by cultures within the United States and throughout the Arctic of Canada and Latin America. She has since enjoyed teaching ELL (English Language Learners) in Minneapolis Public Schools as well as teaching English in rural communities throughout Latin America.

Alex spent the fall of 2006 living and working in the tiny village of Colonia Libertad in the rainforest of Costa Rica. She was hired by a local family to help in the expansion of their eco-tourism project, Finca la Anita. While there she began teaching at the village school and was soon welcomed into the community.

The village leaders had been dreaming of building a basketball court for the village for many years, but after many proposals to the federal government they were beginning to lose hope.

Alex proposed the project to WNBA player Ann Strother who was immediately excited about the idea. Before long the framework for Outward Bounce was in place. She looks forward to working in many communities like Colonia Libertad around the world.
